Wine Talk: Varietal vs. Variety

As your liquor store in Knoxville, we try to keep updated with all things liquor related. Here’s what got us researching lately: In wine terminology, the words “varietal” and “variety” are often used interchangeably even though they mean two very different things.

A variety is simply a variety of grape vine and should be treated as a noun.

Varietal is adjective referring to a product itself that is composed of a specific variety.

Varietal Wine
This is made from a single grape variety or a dominant variety with smaller amounts of others blended in. The legal percentage in order to label a bottle and sell in liquor stores as a specific variety differs across the globe. This is to preserve the integrity of the final product.

Oregon state law requires winemakers to use at least 90% pinot noir grapes in order to label it as pinot noir. Other varieties like syrah, cabernet sauvignon, and merlot only need to contain at least 75% of the named variety. This is the same for all wines in California.

However in Burgundy, almost without exception, the whites are required by French law to be 100% chardonnay and the reds 100% pinot noir. European laws tend to be stricter to establish tiers of quality.

Drop by your local liquor store in Knoxville and pick out your favorite bottle of wine – be it varietal or not!

But why should you let the exhausting decision-making process ruin that special moment of your life? There are plenty of liquor selections to consider -- from arrival drinks, meal pairings, and after-party beverages. It is important that there is an ample supply of drinks available at the beginning of the reception until the wee hours of the wedding after-party. Instead of serving drinks the traditional way, why not let your creative juices flow and add an artistic flair to it?

1. DIY signature cocktails

Considered as a trend, signature cocktails that the couple themselves made have become a popular staple on weddings today. A tasty bowl of rosemary-citrus punch or a pomegranate Caipiroska is perfect to get the festive mood started for your guests.  Or, you can let your guests help themselves with custom-made champagne shots where they can choose fruit garnishes!

2. Nibble-sized food & drink pairings

Food and drink pairings are undoubtedly a mainstay in modern weddings. But have you tried miniature versions of them? Yup! Amp up the reception and get your guests dancing while you serve them with nibble-sized proportions of prosciutto and mozzarella paired with port shot glasses.

3. Alcohol-free bars

Don't forget your guests who arrived sober and opt to leave the party still sober! You can prepare a DIY bar featuring infused waters and iced teas for a special portion of your guests who wants to go alcohol-free. Add a rustic feel to your DIY stations by using mason jars for your drinks!

4. Brew stations

How about beers on wedding receptions? Champagnes and other sophisticated wines aren't just the only liquors to steal the wedding spotlight. For the beer-loving couples and guests, a vintage, DIY brew station will surely complete the wedding reception before the night ends.

1 oz lemon juice
1 tsp fine sugar
3 oz club soda
1 maraschino cherry
1 sliced orange

Method
In a shaker half-filled with ice cubes, combine the gin, lemon juice, and sugar. Shake well. Strain into a collins glass almost filled with ice cubes. Add the club soda. Stir and garnish with the cherry and the orange slice.

MojitoIngredients10 fresh mint leaves
1/2 lime, cut into 4 wedges
2 tablespoons white sugar, or to taste
1 cup ice cubes
1 1/2 fluid ounces white rum
1/2 cup club soda

MethodPlace mint leaves and 1 lime wedge into a sturdy glass. Use a muddler to crush the mint and lime to release the mint oils and lime juice. Add 2 more lime wedges and the sugar, and muddle again to release the lime juice. Do not strain the mixture. Fill the glass almost to the top with ice. Pour the rum over the ice, and fill the glass with carbonated water. Stir, taste, and add more sugar if desired. Garnish with the remaining lime wedge.
